Boosting Gregor Heating, Electrical and Renewable Energy ’s Safety Conscious Culture

When Gregor Heating, Electrical & Renewable Energy hired Tina as their Health and Safety Compliance Specialist, the objective was clear: to evaluate all health and safety compliance processes and ensure they work effectively to help manage and minimise risks. Coming from a project-led background, Tina has always thrived in analytical roles, where she focuses on understanding statistics, growing her expertise in the legislation, while simultaneously identifying issues and finding solutions for them.

“A week in my role is so varied. I love talking to our team and visiting clients as a Health and Safety champion.”

After moving into a training role, she ran a business in the construction industry and found herself more involved with Health and Safety Compliance. With 14 years learning about Health and Safety on the job, she returned to employment to specialise and support companies with her expert knowledge.

Upon joining Gregor’s, she found the Board open to suggestions and change because they recognised the need for a sole leader to take charge of all Health and Safety aspects, although it remains integral to all their roles. Risk meetings are one of Tina’s regular responsibilities
to ensure every department keeps up to date. Gregor Heating is also introducing a new app called Safety Culture to link up with all the on- site workers to boost awareness of safety and manage risks at all levels, supporting the wellbeing of the teams.

Team Training to Demonstrate Importance of Health and Safety

When she started, Tina found the induction process very supportive and she too completed all her mandatory training to be ready to support other teams. Part of her role is to ensure the inductions cover all health and safety requirements, working closely with the HR team who supported her. Talks and training are key tools to pre-empt risks and issues by sharing skills and best practice, as well as being compulsory to remain compliant. Gregor’s team is highly skilled and trusted by commercial and domestic clients because:

  • They are CHAS accredited (Contractor Health and Safety Scheme)
  • All senior management are IOSH qualified
  • All engineers are CSCS and CRB checked
  • They hold ISO9001 and 140001 certifications

Their Managing Director, Steve Gregor says:

“We invest in training all our people to the mandatory levels and beyond, where we can see opportunities to be more conscious of Health and Safety aspects of our work. Hiring a full-time leader for this role sets a clear precedent for our strong commitment to health and safety, reflecting how we prioritise the wellbeing of our employees and clients. We have our external consultant Safety Horizon supporting in the background, who we’ve worked with for many years, and now having an in-house professional supports our aim to enhance our employees’ knowledge, understanding, and awareness. We want to create stronger working relationships and an even safer work environment. This proactive approach not only empowers our team but also demonstrates to our clients that Gregor’s is a professional and forward-thinking company, giving them added confidence in the quality and reliability of our services.”

Good communication at the heart of Health and Safety

To ensure they remain compliant and achieve the next milestone on their Quality Assurance journey, Gregor Heating is working towards ISO45001 this year. They are moving forward with consistency and pace to audit their systems and continue the roll out of the Safety Culture app to improve communication with the wider team.

Tina sums up her thoughts:

“A week in my role is so varied. I love talking to our team and visiting clients as a Health and Safety champion where I can help people, and it covers so many things like stress as well as working at height or compliant processes. Health and Safety is intertwined in everything we do. The strategic direction is that we embrace Health and Safety at all levels of the business and look at what we can do as additional benefits, as well as what we must do. Site inspections give me the opportunity to build relationships with our principal contractors and let them know how I can help them, opening a line of direct communication. They feel like there is someone listening, helping them to resolve any problems, and reassured that we are taking Health and Safety seriously in our company. Good communication lies at the heart of being better, and as a family-oriented company with strong values, Gregor Heating is a great place to work because everyone, including me, takes pride in their work.”
