How the New Boiler Plus law affects you
Earlier this year, the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) implemented ‘Boiler Plus’ legislation (April 6th 2018) to “give people a greater choice, greater control, and tangible savings on their energy bills.”
This means that all boilers must have a minimum ErP (Energy-related Products) of 92%. In addition, all gas and oil boilers must now have digital time and temperature controls and need to comply with one of four energy efficiency measures.
Each one of these four measures are relatively flexible to allow the correct choice taking into account the household needs and type of house where the boiler is being installed.
All of these are easy wins for energy efficiency not to mention saving you money. But here at Gregor Heating, we are seeing more and more customers opting for smart controls, where they can control their heating from anywhere, using their phone or digital device.
Here are some common questions about the Boiler Plus legislation.
Will existing boilers need to be replaced?
No. This only applies to new boilers fitted after April 6th 2018. If you are thinking about installing a new boiler soon, keep reading…
Do installers know how to work with these new technology standards?
Any half decent installer should be trained to understand each of these measures. To ensure you have the most up to date and professional work done, contact us.
Pretty much every boiler we now install comes with digital thermostats and smart controls – read more about smart control options here.
What if I can’t afford the new boiler?
As mentioned, the legislation does not require anyone to replace their existing boiler but instead sets expectations so that when a boiler is replaced, you can be more confident that you are investing in an efficient product that will keep your bills down.
Thinking of installing a new boiler? Make sure you get a Gas Safe registered engineer (as all Gregor Heating engineers are) to fit any new boiler that meets the Boiler Plus energy efficiency requirements.
Be wary of low prices and promises. If you use someone who is not Gas Safe registered it is illegal, not to mention dangerous if they don’t know what they’re doing. You can also be fined up to £5,000 if you knowingly allow work to be carried out that is non-compliant.
