Should I replace my boiler?
Two reasons why you might want to replace your boiler:
1. Boiler is broken or often breaks down
Have you had one cold shower too many? Are you concerned that your boiler is not going to last another winter? It may be time for a new boiler!
How long until another part wears out, putting you to more cost? The cost of spare parts really mounts up, plus parts may be obsolete. [In fact, manufacturers are only obliged to produce spare parts for ten years after any model of boiler stops being sold, so you might not be able to obtain them at all.]
If your boiler keeps breaking down again… and again…. you may come to a point at which you’re tired of having to put up with an unreliable boiler that leaves your home cold in winter at unpredictable times, and leaves you without hot water for your morning shower or evening bath when you need it the most.
And how are all those responsive callout charges stacking up? Could it be that you’ll be better off in the long run if you now invest in a new, reliable boiler from Gregor Heating, backed up a solid ten-year guarantee?
With over 80 heating engineers in our employment, we can quickly turn the installation date around. Call us today on 0117 935 2400 or 01225 738 397 for some sound advice and to book a free survey and no-obligation quotation.
What type of boiler do I need?
Whatever your needs, Gregor can install the right boiler for you!
There are three main types of boiler:
- Combination or Combi Boiler – produces hot water on demand
- Regular Boiler – produces hot water that is stored for use in a hot water tank
- System Boiler – similar to a Regular Boiler, but requires less space, as a pressurised system means you do not need an additional feed and expansion tank in the loft.
Boilers can also differ within the above categories with regard to the fuel that powers them (gas, oil or LPG) and to whether they are condensing type (which is more efficient). For more information on the different types of boiler please see our Boiler Guide.
As well as gas boilers, Gregor can install oil and LPG-fuelled boilers, popular choices for those who live in more rural areas, without a connection to the mains gas infrastructure. We even do electric boilers.
2. Boiler is inefficient
Are you paying over the odds for your existing boiler cover owing to the age of your boiler?
Over the past 30 years, the energy efficiency of the best new boilers has improved dramatically. Even class-leading designs from the 1990s are now left in the shade by today’s A-rated condensing boilers when it comes to efficiency.
Besides, the older any boiler gets, the more inefficient it tends to become as parts age or accumulate grime, with typical efficiency losses of 10-20% over 25 years depending on how well it has been maintained.
You could save hundreds of pounds a year on heating a typical family home by replacing your old, less efficient boiler with one of the best of today’s models through Gregor Heating – giving you back the cost of your purchase and more over its typical lifetime, aside from the obvious advantages of greater reliability and lower servicing costs.
Rising fuel costs have made saving money on heating bills increasingly important to the average householder. A recent survey by financial planners Tilney found that UK utility bills rose by 139% over the 20 year period from 1997 to 2016 – almost three times the speed of compound inflation, which was 50.7%, so in real terms, heating homes has become far more expensive.
According to the 2009 ratings standard of Sedbuk (Seasonal Efficiency of Domestic Boilers in the UK), a new condensing boiler will typically run at 89% efficiency, whereas an old gas boiler will vary between 55% to 65% efficiency – translating to a difference of between £274 and £460 on a typical annual heating bill for a semi-detached house.
Even the Energy Saving Trust acknowledges that you can save up to £300 a year by upgrading to a new A-rated condensing gas boiler, depending on your property and current heating arrangements.
