Powerflush your Central Heating System

Having sludge, scale and other debris in your Central Heating System makes your boiler work harder and can increase your energy bills. It also increases the risk of boiler breakdown and leaks. Powerflushing enhances your system’s performance by removing sludge, scale and other debris.

As the name suggests, Powerflushing involves comprehensively flushing your Central Heating System. A Powerflush Unit or Pump is attached to the  system – ideally to the  pump head – and then used to systematically flush each system component clean.

Following a Powerflush it is best practice is to leave a chemical inhibitor circulating in your Central Heating system to prevent the further build up of sludge and scale. This can be complemented with the installation of a magnetic filter (see FAQ below) if not fitted already.

What are sludge and scale? 

Sludge is a mud like substance that results from the metal of your pipes and radiators corroding due to the water flowing through them. It is usually largely ferrous (i.e. iron based) in nature and so magnetic. Scale is essentially limescale similar to that which forms in your kettle.

Why are sludge, scale and other debris a problem?  

Sludge, scale and other debris impede the flow of water around your Central Heating System and can even cause your pipes, radiators, pump and heat exchanger to block. They increase the risk of breakdown and by making your boiler have to work harder can increase your energy bills.

How do I know if my Central Heating System might benefit from a Powerflush?

Radiator cold spots, excessive boiler noise and dirty water when you bleed a radiator could all be signs of your Central Heating System struggling with sludge, limescale and debris. It is also possible to do a turbidity test that measures the amount of suspended material in your system’s water.

Is a Powerflush required by manufacturers’ boiler warranties?

Some manufacturers’ boiler warranties exclude damage from blockage due to sludge, scale or other debris. Some also require your Central Heating System to be flushed through if not necessarily Powerflushed as part of the commissioning process to remove any debris arising from the installation.

We recommend you remain alert to these risks and use both a Chemical Inhibitor and Magnetic Filter to help control the build of sludge, scale and other deposits in your Central Heating System.

What is a Chemical Inhibitor?

A Chemical Inhibitor is a product that when added to your Central Heating System helps prevent corrosion occurring.

What is a Magnetic Filter?

The ferrous (i.e. iron based) elements of sludge are magnetic. A magnetic filter uses this to strip out the ferrous elements of sludge and allow them to be disposed of. The filter is attached to your Central Heating System and the water allowed to run through it constantly.
